1. May 9: The Day of the European Union (1950)

This is a Nederlog of Saturday, May 9, 2015.

I have briefly considered the question whether this is a
crisis blog: In a way it is (so the opening quotes are kept) and in a way it isn't (so I removed the crisis links). In either case, there is only one section in this file, and that section mostly is a repeat of May 9, 2010 (though not completely).

Why do I repeat it? I liked the file; what I said five years ago still holds; I have some personal reasons; and indeed May 9
is the day of the commemoration in Russia of the end of World War II, today 70 years ago, and the day the European Union started, 65 years ago.

Anyway... here is the file again, mostly as I made it five years ago, with some stuff deleted, and a few dates altered, but mostly the same.

Also, here is one bit of introduction:

This is not a spoof of Russia or the Soviet Union. My father, who was a sincere communist, was liberated by the Russians, because he was at that time locked up as a political prisoner in a German concentration camp (Sachsenhausen). Also, the Russians suffered horribly in WW II, and indeed did most to win it. It is - to some extent - a spoof of Marxism and of the officialese explanations given to commemorations, in which I wholly disbelieve. (In both the officialese explanations and
the commemorations, indeed.)

But mostly, this is to point out what a special day May 9 is: It marks the end of WW II and the beginning of the European Union.

Also, there will be another crisis file later today.
