About ME/CFS

It still is the case that sleeping remains quite difficult for me. This also makes my life rather difficult, at the moment.

Anyway. Yesterday there was again a good amount relating to Snowden's revelations, and today there is a piece on the site, since I was informed some people may miss a lot of what is happening there.

1. On my site's opening

This is about the site and its opening menu. The main reason is that someone I know well had another opening of my site than the one which follows - which should have been there since September 2012:

It should look like it does above, except larger, of course.
It should not show a date.
The links to Nederlog should link today to the present file.
The index to Nederlog should link this year to 2013.
You should see in the
2013 index that there are Nederlogs for nearly all days so far in 2013.

If any of this is not true, there is something wrong.

What I have done to correct this is to reinstitute the changes I made in September 2012, when an earlier version of the above was instituted, mainly because I wanted to save myself the trouble of redating every day.

The present version is like that, except that the link to the Dutch site - "Site in Nederland" - does have the new name in the link.

It is entirely possible that the mistake was made by me: I had two versions of the opening index-file, called index.htm and index.html and the second was the old one, that I replaced in September 2012 by the new one.

I have replaced the second by a copy of

I do hope everyone who reads my site - over 500 visitors with over 3000 hits daily on the least visited, which has statistics, as the larger one does not - now does see what I see.

2. Five other changes

One of the things you may find is that Nederlog has been kept up quite well, all of the year, so far (though some of you know).

There also were some other changes, of which I mention only the five most important ones:
There were a few other changes, but outside Nederlog not many, for my eyes still keep troubling me, though they also have been slowly getting better.

3. What there is on my site

It seems quite a few users of my site have no idea that it is currently over 450 MB and contains a great lot of material.

That material is listed in the table that follows on three levels (of usually around six) - and indeed all you get when clicking the links are index-files, that give access to the real material, that often is a whole book, especially in the philosophy section, to which there in most cases is attached another whole book of my notes. These books also are generally split up over several files, sometimes many, that are all linked together.

Most stuff is in the Philosophy-section, that includes the classical texts of over 20 philosophers with my notes, usually about as long (see Maartensz-index), and also includes a Philosophical Dictionary that currently has 635 terms; the Nederlog-section, currently in its tenth year, with at least 3000 separate entries; ME and MEinAmsterdam, about what M.E. is and how it was for me to live with it in Amsterdam (the second is mostly in Dutch, except for the piece that got me kicked from the faculty of philosophy, briefly before taking my M.A. in that subject (only person that happened to since 1945, and for asking questions); Logic, that is much less than I should like, but does contain several good things, including a review of book by Paul Edwards that is as long as the book; and Computing, that is made much less than it was until ca. 2007, mostly because I lack the energy and also changed from MS Windows to GNU/Linux Ubuntu.

Here is the list of files to the third level (and most entries have a sixth level, so you only see the organizational structure in what follows):

Note that the full text on this site is currently 466 MB (including all the html-formatting an image-files, together possibly 10 to 25% of it, and including texts by others, that take up another 25%, especially in the Philosophy section, and also in the M.E.-Resources sections).

Finally, a note on the formatting of the site.

My eyes are not good at all since a year, due to keratoconjunctivitis sicca ("dry eye syndrome") and are still often painful, and also sometimes hazy. This has improved some, and still is improving, but is far from good. Also, much as I like Ubuntu, it does not have a really good html-editor, which introduces problems of its own.

For these reasons, (i) there are varying formats on the site, sometimes small and sometimes larger, and (ii) there also are occasionally varying formats in one file, which usually have been placed there invisibly, for me, by one of the editors I am forced to use.

I think I have removed most of the changes under (ii), but certainly not all (and it often is not easy with the editors I have and the eyesight I have). In any case, you should know that the size of a file can be easily fixed: Put your cursor on it, press Ctrl, and while pressing that use the scroll-wheel of your mouse to increase or decrease.

Apart from these shortcomings, most of the site should work well - as you can try out with the help of the above table. It may mean you have to click 3 or 4 times to get to something worthwile, but on a large site like mine is, there is no other way.
