On the site + To Do list

1. On the site

I have some changes to the opening files and improved some links - notably to BitsAndPieces and to the sitemap - and realized that it makes sense to generate a new site.

Generating a new site mostly amounts in this case to copying the parts of the old site that I want to retain to a new directory on my hard disk, make some changes and improvements if necessary, and then uploading from the new directory.

The main point is to get rid of redundancies, and systematically check and improve the site per directory.

2. To Do list

So here is the sitemap (brief version: a longer one is here), with a leftmost empty column inserted. This has to be filled in with a + if and when the new version of the directory has been made and uploaded.

As I said: The main point is to get rid of redundancies, and systematically check and improve the site per directory. But I'll also see what needs improving, at least in terms of structure and format, if not in text, though this may also happen.

This may take quite a while, depending on my health and mood, but really needs doing to improve the site, make it more tractable for me and for others, weed out mistakes, and check links and formatting.

Also, one principle will be that all files necessary to display a html file should be in the same directory. This duplicates images but keeps things systematic. And I probably try to produce somewhat better html.

Later today: I had yesterday promised an answer to

"The Politician Puzzle
A certain convention numbered 100 politicians. Each politician was either crooked or honest. We are given the following facts:
- at least one of the politicians was honest
- given any two of the politicians, at least one of them was crooked.
Can it be determined from these two facts how many of the politicians were honest and how many were crooked?"

Yes: 1.

Reason: From the first given, there was one honest politician. Call this one X. From the second given, since it holds for any two politicians, it holds for any two of which X is one. Call the other Y. Since what holds by the second given is that at least one of the two was crooked, and X was not crooked, Y was crooked. Since Y may have been any politician but X, all politicians but X were crooked.

For many more logic puzzles, some much more intricate than this, but always elegant and clever, see Raymond Smullyan.
